Drop in/out Co-op Campaign?

I seen this brought up somewhere else and thought it was interesting. Do you think this kind of thing could work with RDR2? Like say you are playing as Arthur and your friend wants to join in, he will then become one of the other gang members who is working on a mission with you. If there is any solo running, that would naturally be dead waiting time for a second player but it could still be an interesting concept.

That is what my understanding is. I can't see them doing it but I can see it working. It just isn't something that appeals to me nor does it fit Rockstar's  game format.

I don't like this. It seems stupid seeing as a lot of the game you will likely be solo so what fun is it for a friend or someone else to only drop in and out "sometimes". This would just cause issues with loading as well and I would rather the online servers be used for online multiplayer only, not co-op campaigning.

Ghost Recon Wildlands used a similar mechanic in their core game.  You could choose whether to leave your game open to friends as you played or switch to "invite only".  If a friend did choose to join your "friends only" session, your AI team would disappear and your friend would spawn nearby.  ....and vice versa.

The change was absolutely seamless for the session owner and worked very well.  The downside was if you right in the middle of a mission where you may have been depending on that AI but that was usually overcome rather quickly.  Besides, you always had the option to turn off the feature if you're in such a situation and rather not be disturbed. 

My main point is that the mechanic works and there are things that can be tweaked easily enough to help prevent some of the issues folks here have brought up.  When friends joined, they saw the same cutscenes, etc. in the story as the main character (just as you would if you were playing it yourself).  It worked quite well and I would love to be able to play co-op in the RDR2 main campaign.

Fair points here. I was going to come in and say hell no to this but if it is an option you can turn on and off and it worked like GRW, then I would be game to give it a go. I have wanted a Rockstar co-op campaign for some time but I never would have thought of one working in RDR or RDR2.

No doubt it is a different game but the point is simply to show that the concept does work in practice which gives weight to those who are suggesting it.  Whether or not RDR2 will include something similar is another story.  

I don't see it as an unfair comparison in that respect.

This I would probably enjoy but not for the main bit of the game. Rockstar is known for solo campaigns and I don't want that to change.

I just meant for this to be a discussion on the idea, not whether or not it can work. This is something that could easily work in most single player games to some extent. Thanks for the feedback and mixed views/ideas on it though. 

Also good call on siting Ghost Recon. I thought of that after I posted it to use an example of what I was talking about but never edited the OP.

Well yeah it would work and they could make it better than GR if they wanted, but I don't think anyone would like this in a Rockstar game. I think that was mentioned already. A bit late to the conversation on this one but I just don't see people enjoying this.

I was thinking of this the other day. I realize this is not going to be a thing for this game, it would have been mentioned by now or someone would have leaked it but if they did have this concept within the game, they would have to always have at least two members of the gang together and that would greatly screw up the story.

If this was in the game, it wouldn't be leaked. This is Rockstar we are talking about here. I think they hold guns to people when they have them sign on with the company lol

All the people saying they dont like it guess what u dont have to play it...let the people who actually have friends and dont wanna play solo play with friends in co op campaign...smh idk how people don't understand that...ur not forced to play co op online its just an option for everyone else who wants to play like that

GoW series had co-op campaigns.  I personally like co-op campaigns.  Wish more games had them.  In RDR, I liked the PvP  cause it was funny riding with others and taking on the PvE hideouts till other players would show up and PvP or in some cases join in and help you.  That was fun back then.

They was known for solo campaigns till GTA5 came along.  Then they was known for their online game.  They could always add a co-op to a solo campaign options.  GoW did it for their games and it worked well.
