HIGHHorse
I am one of those people who enjoy watching people play games. I think it is the main reason I even bother with YouTube anymore. With what is going to happen, if it sticks, anyone who plays video games will lose most if not all of their revenue and likely not even bother on YouTube anymore. As a result, neither will I. What are your thoughts with what is going on?
Parzival
I typically don't watch gaming streams or Let's Plays anymore, but that sucks for those that do. Looking into COPPA, though, I fail to see how gaming streams have much if anything to do with children's privacy. And hilariously, I found an article where someone referred to YouTube as the "number one kids’ site in the world." I know YouTube is popular with just about all age groups, but since when has it ever been considered a kids' site? The real issue here isn't YouTube, it's parents that want to shuffle their kids off to the TV or computer screen instead of actually supervising them and getting upset when said kids end up seeing something they shouldn't see. Oh, and don't forget the big payouts that the FTC and New York will be getting, those are just a couple of rather unfortunate side effects. 🙄

You need to be 13 and older to even have an account. All this mess comes down to the parents, as usual. Adults who don't even have children get punished because of them. gsamson24
I will be honest, when it comes to watching gamers and gaming videos, I tend to watch this stuff on Twitch. What I enjoy on YouTube is more geared at collectible videos and PC related videos. The latter should be safe from this but I have a feeling a number of collector's I am subbed to will be quitting. One already said he is likely done come January as his make collection focuses on video game characters and anime characters. This will likely qualify him as being a kid's channel even though he is a 30 something year old man who hates kids.
YellowDragon
They broke the law, essentially, and now they have to pay the cost of this. They knew they were doing it too but I guess they didn't think anyone would notice? lol It is a shame. YouTube has been going downhill since 2015 and I can't imagine to see it improve, not for content creators anyways. They are trying to force them off the platform and put a focus on content created by TV shows, News, networks, and celebrities.

If you happened to get a large following prior to 2014, you were in a gold lining. It is insanely hard for anyone to get anywhere on the platform now thanks to their BS rules, horrible algorithm, and shady business deals.
Parzival
When Google bought it, which was back around the mid to the late 2000s, was when YouTube really started going downhill. Back then, you could upload practically anything beyond real snuff films and no one, not even copyright holders, seemed to care. Then Google bought it, copyright holders suddenly started caring because they probably realized they could easily sue a billion dollar corporation for millions in free money, and then Google began removing content wholesale.

I can't blame them for being stricter with stuff but it ruined the vibe of YouTube. I remember being an active watcher back in 2007. It was just so different. There was creative freedom involved and it was just refreshing to be able to find new content creators all the time.

I first got steady Internet service around that time and YouTube and Wikipedia were just about the absolute greatest things I'd ever found on it at the time.

I had a few years under my belt already. Had internet in my house growing up. I didn't have my own computer until I bought my first laptop in 2006. I remember finding sites like these and just getting lost for hours. I can't do it anymore. Just not the same.

I have a younger brother and when YouTube started picking up he somehow ended up on RedTube... I lost it. He thought people were watching porn all day and nothing else. He was 13 at the time. I am sure he graduated to Pornhub after that.

Porn is the only thing that hasn't changed. lol
liquidfire
So didn't something come of this? I remember people freaking out, a few channels I watch mentioned it but I have not heard anything about it since before Christmas. Has YouTube address anything on it? Parzival
I honestly haven't noticed any change in any of the channels I follow.

I have found that we can't even post links to videos anymore on PlayStation messenger app. We can't link our grieve battles or new content links. Not sure if it's YouTube or PlayStation but they have put the smack down on posting links.

Perhaps the latter I could but I always remember having problems with it. It would screw up the link and/or add "***" in.

We have all been posting YouTube videos of music or one of our channels were we have major battles with grieves but since Monday we can post nothing that has the YouTube name on it. Its all just gameplay videos and most of us Never record us talking it's all game noise. Its completely wrecking how we communicate. I'm told we can still use PlayStation share but that app runs me in circles. 😀

RON
Supposedly, if your channel is for kids or "kid friendly" the comment sections will be removed. I don't watch any channels like this to know if it happened. I do know that there have been a number of changes with Sony but that has to do more with Sony than Google/Youtube. I just checked the Totally Spies! channel and the comment sections on all the videos I looked at are disabled. Granted, they were mostly filled with comments about how hot the three protagonists are, but I digress. I like that show. Don't judge me. 🙉
gsamson24
These changes won't happen over night. Give them some time. I am guessing things will be in full swing come summer. I don't think there is as much panic because they haven't been hitting everyone at once with the changes.
xsugarskull
Well, I heard that they are going to start pushing things into action. You'll have to mark vids safe for kids or not. Most adults should mark not safe so they have a comment section, regardless if your content is child friendly or not. Then you have the consider ad revenue which supposedly will be cut for both, so no matter if you label your content for everyone or just adults, you won't be earning as much.
