I've had discussions with people that do that as well. It's certainly not something to brag about as they're missing so much of the overall game experience. Sometimes I'll just sit in an area hunting a specific animal. I'll have my baits and plenty of arrows and just move around a small area for hours on end taking in the sights and sounds and generally having an awesome time. I'm thinking its mostly the younger generation that's doing this mainly as a means to get to a MP element. Since there isn't one here yet it really makes no sense to just do the main campaign missions and nothing else. I plan to run through the story multiple times, I'm being nice for my first game but I'm being a killing machine for my 2nd!!!!!3 points

Fun is different for everyone like @Poggy said. it can be fun just doing the story line. That's how i played RDR, i did the story line and had a blast just doing that. I loved the story, it was entertaining and captured me so i just played it through. Then i went back and played the side missions and whatnot that i missed along the way. Then went back and played again to get what i missed on the last play through. And then i did the whole game again, side content, etc along the way with the story line to refresh before RDR2 was released. I've played other games that had story lines and side missions and open world stuff like this, and they weren't near as fun, the side content got boring so i just played the story line and had fun. I can't go back and replay those, the story line wasn't captivating enough to suffer through it again. RDR2 i'll be playing numerous times through. First to do the other side of the hat, i'm playing red this first time, i'll play white next time. Then i'll have to play through and get gold in all the missions. Not to mention the hunting in this game is phenomenal. I've been loving it, it's mostly what I've done since the game was released.2 points

Many reasons to race to the end. I've done it before just to see the ending, then replay and focus on everything else. This game i'm focusing on everything else first, then i'll finish the story line as i'm forced to, like My son is leaving for Job Corps next week, he rushed through just doing story line so he could see the ending before he had to leave, now he's playing through again doing the side missions and challenges until he leaves. I don't get the people that have to brag about it, what are they 10?2 points

I don't get it either especially in a game like this that is obviously meant to be explored and soaked in. I also don't understand the bragging some do about such things as I simply don't care. It's a game and personally, I'd rather take my time and enjoy them rather than rush through. The only exception are those games I tend to find boring or annoying over time. FC5 was a good example of an open world that to me felt shallow and repetitive. I rushed through the last half and then uninstalled that mess. .......RDR2 is the exact opposite IMO so I'm taking my time.2 points

If we are just talking about the story, RDR2 is easily better. There were some things in GTA V I liked more but it had nothing to do with the story really. Overall, RDR2 is better.2 points

Whenever we first hop into a new highly anticipated game, we let ourselves be swept up by the experience. Having waited so long, we bet most Red Dead Redemption 2 fans are eager to get acquainted with the game as quickly as possible. However, this is a game that doesn't do a lot of handholding, and some systems simply aren't explained. While you'll get the hang of these mechanics with time, there are a few things best known before or when you start playing. Note: These tips are completely spoiler-free. We're only focusing on gameplay elements and mechanics you should know about from the start. Take Your Time First, let's tackle the mindset with which you go into the game with in the first place. Some games are really fast-paced and almost outright require you to rush to complete objectives as quickly a possible. Red Dead Redemption 2 is not such a game. Even more so than its predecessor and much more so than GTA, this game is to be savored like good wine not downed like a shot. Many of the game's systems and mechanics encourage you to ease into a steady pace of play where you take your time to explore, to learn, to understand and to take in everything that is happening. However, if you end up trying to rush with progress, you'll end up souring the experience. While there never is 'one right way' to play any game, there are wrong ways, and in this case trying to fast-track your game sessions is definitely the second. How to Upgrade Cores Red Dead Redemption 2's core system is a tad complex, and isn't really explained in-game. In fact, this is something we dedicate a whole guide to in and of itself which goes into greater detail. Basically, your cores are Health, Stamina and Dead-Eye. These are three little circles above the mini-map and the filled outline represents the amount of each. To upgrade these, which you will definitely want to do, you need to "use" them. It's a bit like real life, you need to use your muscles to strengthen them. With Dead-Eye and Stamina, this works easily. Just often perform stamina-consuming acts like sprinting and occasionally you'll get small Stamina upgrades. Same for Dead-Eye - just use it and it will be upgraded. Health is a different matter, since "using" it doesn't work. You can't get shot by lawmen or get mauled by bears and end up healthier than before. Cores also passively drain over time adding a kind of survival mechanic, as these are separate from your actual bars. You need to eat occasionally to prevent your health core from draining completely. This is what you can use to upgrade them. For a more comprehensive look at Cores, check out our guide (coming soon). Always Loot You can loot a lot of things in Red Dead Redemption 2. We suggest you do. Loot everyone, loot everything. If you adhere to this, you'll likely always have enough money, ammo and supplies throughout the game. Little dark crosses mark lootable items on your minimap, which become lighter and greyed out once looted. X marks the spot, and never ignore the X. Check Your Log Often Pressing left on your D-Pad will open your log, which tracks all of your non-mission activities. If you want to avoid grinding these activities later on, occasionally open your log to check what objective happen to be nearby. Completing them organically while on your way to other goals will make things more fun. Refill Dead-Eye With Chewing Tobacco Health and stamina regenerates on its own, but Dead-Eye does not. You need to pay attention to keeping it filled before encounters. Shooting enemies adds small amounts of fill, but the best and quickest way is by using chewing tobacco. It's a common loot item that goes into your consumables, so you should have pockets full of the stuff if you follow our looting tip. Use Your Bandana If you find yourself in the mood for a bit of premeditated criminal activity in Red Dead Redemption 2, make sure to wear a bandana. This doesn't have any negative effects, but it does hide your identity meaning what you do won't get bounty hunters sent after you. Local lawmen will still chase you if you are caught in the act, however they won't know that Arthur Morgan did the dirty deed, thus keeping your notoriety from increasing. Check out our other guides to learn more about how the game works. The post Red Dead Redemption 2 Tips For Beginners appeared first on RDR2.org. Read the full story1 point

Last night talking with another player and he asked if I beat the game yet. I said no, I am trying to do as much as I can in one experience. He then tells me that he beat it in under 48 hours. He then wants to brag about how he finished it before me. I personally don't care I am enjoying the game. So other then being rude. Why is it players feel a need to rush through the game? By the way, he did no side missions, hunting, fishing, or anything else that was not part of a mission.1 point

I hate being limited to 4 horses, Rockstar waited over 3+ years to make this beautiful master piece, include all these diverse breeds of horses, spread them out throughout the map, only to limit us to 4 horses?! Blows my mind. @Rockstar PLEASE EXPAND THE STABLE CAPACITY TO AT LEAST 6+ THANKS.1 point

Hello! I've bought Xbox one X and Red read redemption 2 bundle the other day. I was watching ton of reviews and digital foundry videos. Everybody saying Xbox one X version is very stable, performance is so good and so on... However i experience stuttering or fps drops often. Game is very smooth out in the wild with occasional stuttering , nothing annoying. But when in cities i get often stuttering and its so easy to notice, and i'm not even been to Saint Denis, i'm talking about smaller cities like Valentine and especially Strawberry (There i get a lot of stuttering). Also i noticed stuttering every time i'm looking at camp fire, also in some of the shops. Do you think its my new Xbox one X? Do you guys have stuttering free experience? Hows in Strawberry city for you? (That area stuttering the most for me). Maybe its just me used to games that are very stable 30 fps? But according to reviews this should be a stable 30 fps game. And Digital foundry said that on Xbox one X games stutterers only 4 time the whole play through. Thanks in advance!1 point

The previous TV I was using had a weird issue. Where it would lose the signal on some Cable channels. You'd change the channel and see it fine for a brief period. And then it would go blank like it lost the signal. Change it to a different channel it was fine. The cable guy came over to check it out and he said it was an issue with my TV's HDMI port. Looking at the back of my TV, the HDMI port stuck outward towards the wall. So gravity was constantly tugging the HDMI cable downward, at a 90 degree angle. With the cable dangling where the TV sat on a TV center and looping down to the cable box underneath it. Also, moving things around could also cause strain on it. Over time this appears to have damaged the port. Soon after that, I got a new TV. This was in 2015. I checked the back. It's HDMI ports face downward. This looks to be easier on the TV's HDMI port.1 point

The percent is based on the 4 things. To get 100%, you just need to Scan, Track, Kill and Collect each animal at least once. I have some animals I've killed and collected like 50+ of them, but haven't tracked them (mostly birds), so I don't have 100% on them yet. Eventually will, but not a top priority for me.1 point

Lol.... Yeah, hunting is not my bag either but still one of those skills I wish I had learned. I have my old Ruger MkII and 10/22 for when my kid gets older but yeah, the airsoft route is beginning to look like a good route for an intro. The only rifle I want now is an M1A Scout then I'll be happy.1 point

That's what i did with my boy. Airsoft/BB gun when he was 6, .243 youth at 10 to go hunting with me. Then when he decided hunting wasn't for him i swapped out the stock on the .243 and it's mine Can't have too many rifles... His first hunting trip was a draw hunt for Pronghorn. They're worse than rabbits around my brothers ranch. So we went there to hunt some in his fields. First time we saw a herd we snuck up on them and used the brush around a power pole as cover. Till my son sat down on a thistle and yelped and scared them away. Jump back in the truck, drive across a couple fields to the next herd, he slams the truck door on accident and they go running off. found a 3rd herd in a field a few to the south. Had a great big Case tractor in the corner we hid near for cover. Had a perfect line on a doe broadside but then he got buck fever. Sit and aim and fidget, aim and fidget, then the doe turned and trotted off and he called it. "Dad my butt hurts and i'm done, lets go home" lol Gotta love those first hunting trips1 point

That's a big step. While not old (mature) enough in my mind yet to wield a firearm (he's a little younger than yours), I still quiz my son on the 4 basic rules that all children should know about when they encounter them "in the wild". .....stop, don't touch, get out of the area and tell a family member / adult. As he gets older we'll be talking about the 4 basic rules of gun safety when handling firearms. My dad taught me on BB guns in our backyard. Nowadays I have been entertaining the idea of Airsoft guns as a decent alternative for instruction. I have my old Ruger MkII and 10/22 when he's ready to move up to the real thing. .....fun times.1 point

That's exactly it. I went out with friends for pizza and beers last night. Brought the conversation here up with my teacher friend as i was curious what he did with the papers. He gave those kids an F on their English essay. One parent threw an epic fit about her child getting an F. Something about that's how English is now, look it up online they're real words. 'Cause anything on the internet is true right? Just ask the state farm insurance girl and her french boyfriend. He said the mom was looking at urbandictionary.com because it's a real valid dictionary so everything in it is real English and should be allowed in their papers she thinks. Parental failure, idiots breed and teach their kids to be idiots. And that family is very dysfunctional, she was a problem teen, knocked up at 15 had this kid at 16. Her parents took custody as she got into drugs and had a new boyfriend every other week, not to mention the guys she slept with for her drugs. She finally cleaned up her act, at least enough to get custody back, and now she's the vengeful, my kid is a saint, type parent. Really feel sorry for the kid, but what can you do.1 point

Oh sorry brainbug Lol H1Z1 is the online battle royale multiplayer game. Played Horizon Zero Dawn a lot. It is real impressive and a good game for comparison. Snow in Frozen Wilds looks nearly like the snow at the beginning in RDR2. Best HDR support Strange is that the pro version looks not like on this comparison. Horizon Zero dawn looks way better as in this fanboy video. you mean Horizon Zero Dawn. THis is one of the best looking open world titles. Sorry for my mistake. 😂1 point

Come on... grow up! It's seems that sharpness is the only thing that matters for you guys. That's insane. I have also switched to HZD and, aside from the reality crisp graphics, it's doesn't look anything like RDR2. RDR is WAY better, more real, more detailed and way more jaw-dropping. I acknowledge that RDR2 is indeed blurry though.1 point

Thanks Well, I hope they fix it too. Too bad that I have almost finished the game. I learned to ignore the stuttering. It was really hard and cost me a lot of nerves but now I can enjoy the game. I am also like you playing on my PC mostly in 144 Hz, so not stable 30 fps with bad frame pacing was a REAL PAIN for me. Trust me. I even bought Xbox one X because I thought its gonna be butter smooth there. NOPE! It hurts even more when you compare RDR2 performance to Spider-Man for example. SM also runs in 30 fps but the gameplay is butter smooth. I think this all is caused by this frame pacing and I also cannot understand why R* didn't do it properly. Well... we have to wait 5 years when 60 fps is a standard.1 point

He's going to have his own .22 before he has his own phone. I need to see that he can be responsible enough to respect his possessions and treat them with the care they warrant. Next summer, I'll take him to the farm and he'll get to shoot for the first time. He already helps me clean my gun and pack my kit when I go deer hunting every year, and he should be ready for the increased level of responsibility.1 point

I finally installed the game a few days ago. I was really disturbed by some of the seriously bad reports being written here. I did not want to be disappointed by the game I was so looking forward to. Exiting the snowy prologue I had a chance to see the colour and definition for the first time. I usually play in "Movie mode" on my Phillips Ambilight, however with this game (HDR on), I play in "game mode" which really brings up the colours. Whether the HDR is fake or not, to my eyes it looks much more realistic and atmospheric with the muted tones of having HDR on. With HDR off, every thing is too colourful, almost cartoonish. It does take a little while to set HDR calibration, as during bright days it seemed a little dull, so I upped the calibration and it looks beautiful now. Night time is quite bright, however anyone who has been out at night under a bright moon knows that it is surprisingly capable of providing illumination, and can sometimes seem almost like a dull/overcast day level of light. HDR conclusion: "fake" or not the colouring in this game is natural, and capable of some stunningly realistic lighting effects and sense of atmosphere. Better on. Blur: I understand some of the issues you guys have mentioned now. Visuals at mid to long range do have a hazed appearance to them. Certain cut scenes have blur on characters faces etc. This is because the "crisp" face is the one the art director wants you to focus on. I would encourage any western fan to watch The Ballad of Lefty Brown, one of my favourite films. Take note of the "blur" - there is an early scene, in the first 5 minutes, where a character front of screen is perfectly in focus, while the guy holding a gun to his back is blurred, exactly as in RDR2. Regardless of what technology Rockstar have or haven't used, I believe this is an artistic choice: watch the film, and see the blurring and muted colours so common to western movies. Really it is an issue which I think people are misunderstanding, and getting worked up about, if you don't focus on the blur all the time, and accept it is deliberate, you can enjoy the game. Now before people call me troll, or tell me not to write here as I'm making them angry (lol), I do have one very valid point that may help. Sickness: Turn Boost Mode off! I had eye strain and felt nauseous as soon as I left the snowy prologue - like the game was overfocusing my eyes, and I was cross eyed. It made me feel sick. I had HORRENDOUS frame stuttering...I was so disappointed, I knew something was wrong...so I turned Boost Mode off, and the frame rate now is smooth, what's more, no more sickness or eye strain. Perspective This game is clearly made to be played in 1st person. This makes the visuals so much smoother, when turning your head etc, changing direction. It is not realistic or immersive to play 3rd person! I think the game is designed for 1st person, I tried 3rd, and the controls felt "clunky" as people report, and spinning the camera looked far worse. I won't write any more, I hope some people consider my points valid, and that my tip about Boost Mode helps. Watch the film, and understand that blur and muted colours are very much a feature of western movies, stop getting so worked up and just enjoy the game, which I think is beautiful and incredible. Sorry for the essay, I had to communicate these things, enjoy the game, cheers.1 point

I don't think it's a fair comparison at this point because we have only experienced half (or less) of the game in that we haven't seen RDR2 Online as of yet. Folks will have their reasons for supporting one over the other, but for me, the pacing of the story mode in RDR2 is vastly superior. With few notable exceptions, the pacing is languid and allows me as a player to just soak in the ambiance that the game creates, enveloping me in it's atmosphere and titillating my appreciation for world building, story telling, and taking advantage of my appreciation for small nods and winks--there's so many of these that I couldn't even begin to elaborate on them here, but I play almost every day at this point for multiple hours a day, and I'm STILL only in Chapter 2, but still finding new things. I mean,1 point

agreed. I just had to replace my HDMI cable for this when i got my new xbox one s (i'm too cheap to buy the X still) a few weeks ago. Actually weapon doesn't matter on Legendary, you won't ruin their hide like you would shooting a regular animal with the wrong gun trying get the perfect hide. Use your biggest gun, shoot it in the head till it drops. or the ass. doesn't matter.1 point

From what i'm reading online (gameshedge.com hunting guide) there's 4 quality grades for meat. Best Big game (gators, wolves, bears, moose, etc.) High Quality Exotic Bird (Parakeets, Parrots, Pelicans, etc.) Tender Pork (various pigs) Mature Venison (Deer and pronghorn) Prime Beef (Cattle, Buffalo, Oxen) Game Meat (Rabbits, Ducks, Pheasants, etc.) Succulent Fish (trout, salmon, other such game fish) Good Quality Crustacean (Shellfish) Flakey Fish (Perch, Bass, etc.) Plump Bird (Turkey, Geese, Chicken, etc.) Grisly Mutton (sheep, goats) Low Quality Gritty Fish (Bluegill and other trash fish) Herptile Meat (Frogs, Iguana, etc.) Gamey Bird (small birds) Stringy Meat (rodents and other small varmints) I read somewhere else while looking for this list, that perfect animals will give high quality, ie that prefect buck might give you big game, or a large bluegill (caught with the lure or special lure) might give flakey fish. I haven't paid enough attention to verify this. I'll have to check that out tonight while i'm out hunting.1 point

Reporting back from Strawberry: I've had no issues. I ran around for a long time in various places, tried carrying a lantern at night for more lighting and shadow calculations, tried getting into a massive gunfight, jumped on buildings, swam in the stream... nothing really seemed to cause any problem. Like I said earlier, I did see some very minor slowdown in Saint Denis, but nothing in Strawberry.1 point

Agree with some of the others, the most important thing imho is to just take it slow, really, really slow. Almost forget about the story, and do story elements as you feel like doing them, try not to be all "type A" about reaching "the ending". This is a game to be enjoyed, and think of the story "ending" not as a reward, or a puzzle to be solved, but as something you'll reach someday after you've enjoyed all the game has to offer. Focus on exploring, studying the animals, learning to hunt, fish, take care of yourself, think of it more as going out for an evening ride after work on your horse to take in the sunset, and pick up a few herbs, maybe shoot a rabbit along the way. Just experience it and take it in. There is no hurry to "finish" this game. Most games have goals, you might want to acquire as much money as possible, or as much resources ... but in RDR2 I don't feel that is really the point. There are a ton of technical tips about doing specific things that could be talked about, but my tip in general would just to be opportunistic - as someone above said, loot when you can, and always be aware of the things you need to progress in any category. There will be all kinds of objectives that you can have, but instead of working towards a specific one, my advice is to just enjoy the game and always have all of the next steps to your objectives in mind so that you can be opportunistic and take advantage of situations as they arise. Maybe you need a certain kind of animal to progress at something, or maybe there is a certain action you have to take to advance a skill, or a challenge to gain some resources, my advice is don't be so driven to "complete a project" and just have all of your projects in mind and enjoy finding pieces to the puzzles as you run across them.1 point

My own tips for starting the game: 1) Get the special edition/ultimate edition so as to get the extra stuff. The guide is also very useful. 2) First thing to do is change the settings: auto-run, aim adjust, targeting, hold mechanics etc 3) Approach the game with a careful mindset. Take your time and drink it in. Play slow. 4) Long free roam play is best done when you hit chapter 3 - you'll have unlocked loads of important stuff by then. Consider all of chapters 1 and 2 prolonged tutorials. 5) Be really careful to avoid accidental crimes: walk don't run in towns; be careful to put gun away; hitch horse and don't ride fast near people; etc etc. The controls make it easy to accidentally get into a fight, and the bounty system is harsh - especially when you have little cash early in the game. 6) Play through the first parts of the game as a good guy - the law is deadly and you wont be able to afford to pay bounties. It is much, much easier to avoid trouble at first. Play smart and generally white hat until later. 7) Manually save fairly often. 8 When riding, have you varmint rifle and/or bow ready, pick off game as you ride and skin it for extra supplies and cash just as you go about your business. You will be doing a LOT of riding to start with - might as well get stuff as you go. 9) Get the Dutch and Arthur camp upgrades early. 10) Run, jump, pat horse, feed and brush horse, swim, etc as you go to build player and horse cores and bond. Don't forget to wash, eat, rest, change clothes.1 point

I want to get onto a river boat for a poker tournament where: the stakes are high and the women are pretty, the drinks are free and the competitors are gritty! Hoping they don't screw the single-player "games" - I like the idea of using only in-game earned money that can't be bought with real money however that might mean that players have separate wallets or something similar.1 point
