In free roam, defensive 100% of the time. When I want to shoot 'em up, I'll play the missions or go into one of the many Showdown modes. I can shoot players in many, many games on the market. There are very few where I can grow a character that can cook, hunt, fish, craft and, hopefully eventually, have a little homestead--while having the option to pull a trigger when I find it appropriate . So I'll come back and take advantage of that (when the changes are implemented).3 points

What?! Bro, do you even internet? Disproportionate outrage over ideas and concept is cyberspace's bread and butter!2 points

I'll likely opt for Defensive mode most times if not all. As @Netnow66mentioned, there are already several missions that encourage randoms to challenge me as well as PvP events, player assassinations, daily challenges, etc. that I routinely participate in (some not necessarily as a volunteer) and I'm ok with that. Besides, there is still the possibility of randoms trying to kill me regardless of my status so it's not as if the threat goes away entirely, but I'm not going to put myself out there as a more willing target because that's simply not what I do (even now). I don't know if others noticed but there was something in the explanation of the Hostility system that caught my eye..... Seems that when someone gets marked as a hostile that everyone else who isn't hostile may be able to attack them without penalty. .....so those white-hats running around trying to help keep law and order so to speak may have more opportunity an incentive to do so.2 points

Well, maybe your right. But I have the feeling no matter what they try, there will always be a fraction of the players that will do the best they can to find exploits to the system to take advantage of. And there will always be a fraction of players that find something wrong with whatever rockstar releases/patches/fixes and complain about it... Me, I think this system sounds like a good balanced approach, since it appears that for the time being at least we are all sharing the same lobbies. I’ll reserve my condemnation of the idea until after I’ve had a chance to try it out.2 points

its laughable at best!!! they clearly can add free aim so wtf are they waiiting for?!?! defensive players wont die by headshots etc... simple they can just shoot you with explosive rounds or throw tnt at you before you can take them out lmao what a ridiculous addition.2 points

Personally, I liked the changes in the last TU with the proximity and colored blips along with the revised parley mechanic to include whole posses. I'll tell you the truth though, I never got to use that feature as I only ran into a couple situations that would have warranted it if they had been able to kill me outright. What I wasn't happy about and agreed with those who raised hell about it was the fact that you would be penalized for self defense. I'm quite glad to see they will be attempting to address that in the upcoming update with the new Hostility system. Attackers will be marked as enemies and victims will not be penalized with a bounty nor any ding to their hostility level / blip status. I also like the fact that players will have the option of a Defensive or Offensive play style. ....and the fact that Defensive will make engagements with others free aim. This should really help newer players out as they won't be so easily steam rolled. ....and if they are, they still have options. The Offensive option still keep the current game play the way it is so folks have that choice. Beyond all that I think it's important to note that R* has clarified their vision in this last announcement. With all the back and forth over what Free Roam is or what some thought R* intended it to be, I think it's now quite clear and frankly, I am happy to know it was what some of us have been expecting. That's not to say that there won't be problems, exploits ,etc., but I do like that they are trying.2 points

For the ps4 pro this game should be called brdr2 - blurry red dead redemption 2. After few hours I gave up. It looks terrible and nothing can change it. For me this game is unplayable with ps4 pro (samsung ks7000). I just wasted 70 $. It was definitely my last game from the rocstars... Update! Ok, finally I found the solution for my set (ps4 pro +Samsung KS7000 tv). All I had do was switching off HDR and setting TV "Auto Motion Plus" = custom, blur reduction = max, judder reduction =9 or max. Now the game looks far far better. I can even say looks amazing 😉2 points

I'll leave this thread here for now but if it turns out to be just another one of the same discussions on the topic of griefing (which quite frankly is at the root of your argument), I am going to merge it with the griefing thread as I have in the past. .....and I'm going to say this up front since there seems to have been a misunderstanding as to why I merged one of your threads before, I'm am not doing this to stifle your input, bury your posts, etc. This is simply because we don't need multiple threads discussing essentially the same thing with the same people making the same arguments regarding this hotly debated topic. It's nothing personal and never has been. I actually agree with some of your points. Having said that, you may have missed it but there is some additional news today regarding upcoming improvements to the balance of the game that you may be very interested in including an expansion on anti-griefing measures and new features to help balance the gameplay. Take note of the new Hostility system and Offensive / Defensive playstyle options:2 points

As some may know, I typically create a thread whenever R* announces a new update for RDO. Since updates may possibly coming out weekly now, I thought about taking another moderators advice and making a consolidated reference thread. However, instead of compiling all the update, promo and news info in one thread, this one will have links to each of the individual ones that folks can use for reference. I will still post individual threads on these announcements where discussions can take place, etc. but I will no longer pin them. Instead I will update this one (which I will pin & lock) with links to each of the threads. Hope folks find this useful. Since this thread will be locked, please message me if you have any questions about it. I just wanted to share my final thoughts of the online experience for others who are new and wanting to give it a try and maybe having a rough go of it. Sorry if it is a bit long, I wanted to cover a few different POSITIVE things rather than negative stuff as is usually the case. I tried to break this down and make it easier to read quickly so it doesnt drone on and on. Yesterday, I didnt know about the server issues, I joined early in the day around 7 am EST, and I played until around 5 am the next day, it was great. What made it great? There were no more than 2 players in the game at any given time except when I left finally after 23 hours or so I was able to level up 7 or 8 levels, upgrade my horse, weapons, etc.. Found two treasure maps and treasure. I think players who have been around a while, did all this as it became available and now are bored with those and while waiting for content end up experimenting and often it ends up with player killing and getting revenge, when it is friends killing eachother for fun, that is one thing, and probably great fun sometimes, but as far as strangers go, not so much. There were enough players that you could take part in stranger missions on the other side of the map without interruptions. I was able to finally try the stranger missions and those were really fun, one was with Sean and I thought that was great!! But without players killing me arbitrarily while I am fishing or on my way to market, I was able to get a lot done, and experience a lot more of the online portion of the game. Up until yesterday I hadnt had a chance to try any of these. Previously I hadnt wandered far from camp as it always ended bad, even fishing in a corner by myself just outside of Blackwater. I nearly wrote the game off and never looked back, but this server issue really gave me a 23 hour window to roam and explore unmolested and it let me glimpse at all the game had to offer. The two different people that did approach and kill me while I was fishing, were still a reminder of what I hate about this game, people, but they were so few and far between that it really wasnt enough to worry about. The only other interruptions were from people who tried to stop me while doing a stranger mission like getting a cart, or delivering mail, etc.. and those are parts of the game, I even took an assassination job and hunted down a guy and after he got me 3 times I eventually killed him and closed the mission. Anyway I had only fished and hunted until yesterday because every time I left my camp for any reason I was eventually gunned down without warning and I was getting frustrated and sick of it honestly. After seeing so much more of the game yesterday I got a better feel for what was intended and it really is fun, especially seeing characters from the single player missions woven into the story, I thought that was great. If you dont like the way the game is right now and are trying to give it a shot, if you hang in there til you get a day like I did yesterday and hopefully leveling up a little will help make the game a little easier and more fun for you.. I think people need to remember it is beta and they are working it out so not to expect so much so quickly and instead of playing it everyday and getting frustrated and bored and ending up killing everyone, go do something else and give the game a chance to grow a little, give others the same opportunities you had over the past 3 months. Sure there is killing and robbing, thieving, stealing, etc.. But you should still be able to go exploring with your friends and family or to the local butcher or fishing, or a soothsayer/ fortune teller, go to the bar or a show, without the fear of death, even in Deadwood, or Virginia city, St Louis, etc.. Yesterday felt more like that, sure there are things to worry about and threats everywhere, but not just bored players chasing you down and murdering you for no apparent reason. I really hope to see this trend continue one way or the other. This felt like what I was hoping might eventually come, two different free roams, one a free for all, where anything goes, and one where roaming players are protected, if they arent in a mission of some kind then they can not be shot or hunted, only within the framework of a mission of some kind, so if they chose to meet their buddy and show them around the map and show them some stuff, they wouldnt have to worry about being hunted every two minutes. I noticed certain players even in stranger missions you can not target, meaning they cant be shot, well there ya go, this is what they can do for players in free roam, so that you take out of the equation random needless killing, you can kill npc's for your daily challenges and stuff and players who partake in missions too, just not free roaming players, if it were like this, the game would be great and I cant see how anyone could complain about not being able to kill innocent bystanders. One thing I noticed both players who needlessly killed me claimed that I had previously killed them or been part of a team or posse that did, I had to correct them both as I had never joined a posse, started one or been any part of one, I never bothered anyone or shot another player and still have not except when instructed to by the game during a mission. So I think the game can do more to tell you who killed you each time and save that data so a player can add you to a list and remember you when he see's you again in the world to let you know to either avoid him or her or to get revenge on them, either way it might help eliminate false claims like these about me. Im not sure if they just made excuses, or if they really thought that and just didn't pay attention to who killed them, I think the latter. There were times that up to 10 people were in the map as the day wore on, and when early morning rolled around again, sometime around 5 am, I over took a hideout, Fort Riggs by myself, and I was collecting loot, when finally two other blue dots came to see me, luckily my base was only a few hundred feet from RIggs so was able to escape being shot down and made it to my camp and it was then I decided enough was enough, I had gotten an Arabian, a shotgun, upgraded most of my weapons at the smith, won a few fights while carrying out stranger jobs, and delivering mail, etc... I am very thankful for this server shutdown today as it gave me a chance to gain a better foothold in the world of RDR2O and see what other things you can do besides just fear all the dots and live in the shadows. Ultimately it is up to Rockstar to fix this thing so everyone can have a good time, and you can certainly have a good time playing without ever harassing players, so I dont know why it is taking them so long to patch it for this, but in the end if they do I think you will see a boom in population on these servers. It took me a couple weeks to get a chance to experience the online properly and it has a ton of potential, I hope it continues to grow in a positive way, and that a simple solution is implemented to strop griefing all together. Many disagree but forget we want the game to succeed, we want others to enjoy it too and experience the beautiful world within RDR2 and everyone needs to be able to enjoy it at their own pace and the way they want, no players should be forced to accept another players vision for the game, aggressive players can hunt and kill npc's til they are tired of it, those who play less aggressively can fish or hunt or explore until they are sick of it without fear of bored players hassling them. I didnt plan to add anything to these boards but I did want to leave on a positive note for other new players who have reached out to me with their own concerns and frustrations and let them know, there is fun in there, just try to stick it out a bit longer before you give up and move on. last thought, Sean said to me in a mission he sends us on, how they dont kill innocents, folks who arent "in the game" so to speak, and I think that nails the sentient of what I have been saying all along, outlaws ? yes, with a code? yep, arbitrarily kill innocent folks for fun, nope, not really. Even the outlaws had a code and didnt just murder for fun, they had a reason, even if that reason was selfish and a little skewed, but they didnt want to be hunted everywhere they went just like in the SP game laying low, not causing too much commotion, etc.. instead of killing everyone they encounter they refrain from it to avoid being detected and caught unnecessarily. So maybe some folks should re-think they motives and stop arguing that this is just "how it was" it wasnt, and it serves no purpose, remove that one part of the game, and all of a sudden you have something for everyone. This is all just my opinion, based on my experience in this game. everyone has their own views and rightly so, we arent necessarily right or wrong, just trying to find balance so that one size fits all can actually fit all. Flame on, and have a great day. If not for you guys and gals in here, this whole experience would suck a lot more than it sometimes does.1 point

Hello guys and girls! I did a video detailing how to get all 144 cigarette cards fast and free (without buying them in a shop)! The idea is to reproduce a glitch that makes cigarette packs reappear again and again. Check it out here; This is my very first Internet video! My English ain't perfect, but I hope you'll find the video useful! The technique is like this; - Take a train to Riggs Station. - Hijack the train when you arrive at the station. - Escape quickly and hide (so you don't get a bounty - otherwise it won't be free). Come back to the train when the investigation is finished and the lawmen are gone. - Pick the 2 cigarette packs in the cabinets of the first train car with a safe, and make sure to close the cabinets doors behind you. - Go at the other end of the train and pick the cards in the same cabinets in the train car with a safe (close the cabinet doors). - Come back to the first train car to discover the cigarette packs reappeared!! Do the same with the second train car. - Repeat until you complete all sets!1 point

yeah but that was including the recess times, and after that the victim's families sued OJ, that court hearing lasted half as long as the criminal trial fubar and found him guilty in both counts. Correction on the OK Corral trial, it was the preliminary hearing that lasted 30 days straight, it never went to trial.1 point

This is the best solution without lobbys becoming pathetic and dull.keep the game free of all these rules.just work on content.then people may not be as bored as they are.seems to me the game lacks massively in actual cowboy content.therefore people make there own up.we want outlaw baddys we got them in the form of griefers.never thought i would say this but what is rdro without the griefers.i get frustrated but also enjoy at same time. Rockstar need to add another map to this game for higher level players who want be free.like the dark zone in division.full on cowboy fun.i have an awful lot of ideas on how this game could go.but quite a process to be heard. Use this existing map as a stepping stone to rank up and learn the game.i want to see the early days of new york come into play.first cars.make it a history lesson whilst we play.1 point

I wondered about this too but I'm hoping it means that maybe we can have multiple characters like GTA: Online. I have a few movie characters I wouldn't mind making1 point
-
I was wondering about that... without re-reading the page, I was thinking it could either be that you become marked as an enemy to the player you attacked, or you could be marked as an enemy to the lobby. If it’s the latter, it could make for some fun cops and robbers play.1 point

Is it just me, or do they seem to be actively trying to make it worse, as opposed to better? At this point, I'd almost rather have the launch version of Beta back, with some minor tweaks to the blips on the mini map, and that's it.1 point

Not the best when your trusty nag has inexplicably gone back to horse bonding lvl 1 and flounders around like bambi on ice! Seamless riding to safety goes out the window!1 point

When I log RDO I am ready to die or fight for my life. So the assassination missions don't bother me. Whether I'm being targeted or I am the attacker, I've only ever lost once as I kept tripping up. But regardless of how far they are, I can catch them or run from them. It helps that I know the map pretty well and I can run across just about any terrain without tripping up, usually. Most targets run North East as I guess most people have trouble running through there. Problem being is that I don't, and they do, so that usually is their death sentence. I do find it easier when I'm not the leader and I can get going rather than be stuck in the cutscene. Hell I've been hog-tied and the target had one hell of a headstart WITH their posse surrounding them, still died. But yeah it goes both ways, I appreciate when people are one and done.1 point

Special Dead Eye features are enabled as part of story missions, you've probably seen these notifications pop up during Chapters 1 and 2. The next level will come in Chapter 4 ("Banking, the old American Art"), Chapter 5 ("Fleeting Joy"), and Chapter 6 ("Goodbye Old Friend"). You'll have to wait until Chapter 5 to have the fatal areas highlighted. Your health/stamina/dead eye outer rings are just that - you get increasing amounts of them as you add more to the outer ring. There's no additional features.1 point

They don't split bud. If your talking about level progression maps only you collect those , if your talking about maps from gang hideout , whoever picks the map up , if there is one ,gets the treasure. Have never seen a split yet and I'm level 138. Hope this helps1 point
-
The first time it happened to me I missed the notification and was shot to pieces in my camp. I was bemused and angry. Second time I saw the notification and got away! Putting two and two I realised what had occurred the first time and let it go. Sometimes I find it a pain, as you have to drop what your doing but I certainly don't take it personally or stalk anyone over it.1 point

This game has a lobby option problem.. So theres really no need to keep dumbing the game down even more with a bunch of convoluted ideas. Give me a hardcore lobby. All free aim. No ability/passive cards. (Dead eye only makes your aim perfect/no recoil). Blips only show up when shooting and players are in ear shot. No stupid defensive/offensive/bounty systems. If R* would simply add more lobbys.. People would actually be happy. I know I would.1 point

This issue is no longer present since the update for me , sorry 🙂1 point

Why not give it a chance before tearing it down? We don’t know how it’ll all add up yet, or how it’ll be fine tuned down the road. It sounds like a good balanced approach to all tastes...1 point
-
Yes, it appears the vision is becoming clear... you can be an outlaw or not as you personally see fit, but there are advantages and disadvantages to either side. It seems they’re going to encourage the free roam PvP while at the same time trying to curb it so free roam doesn’t become a giant free for all death match. I’m curious to see how the bounty system settles out down the road. I think it would be fun to have a more player involved bounty system.1 point

Today saw the release of a small weekly content update for Red Dead Online, adding a fishing challenge to the game. We also know about four other game modes coming to the game in the next three weeks, however the next major Beta Update is planned for later this Spring. Rockstar has detailed their upcoming plans for new features, based on player feedback. Ever since release, one of the developers' main concerns has been griefing - or, rather, the effort to minimize this phenomenon. Over the course of the Beta, new systems have been put in place to mitigate the issue, to varying measures of success. In their continued efforts in this regard, Rockstar's developers have devised the new Hostility system which will be coming to the game soon. The Hostility system seeks to eliminate one of the weaknesses that the proximity-based blip system suffered from. Players who try to defend themselves from griefers run the risk of being marked as violent themselves, thus increasing the visibility of their blip on the map and turning red. The upcoming Hostility system will monitor which party in a conflict is the aggressor, so victims of griefing can safely protect themselves. This way, if you kill a griefer - regardless of whether they were griefing you or someone else - your own hostility stat will not increase, nor will you incur any bounties. Naturally, the Hostility system won't come into play when you are in structured PvP scenarios. However, keep in mind that if you are engaged in free roam PvP activities, killing other players in free roam who are not participating will increase your hostility stat. The Hostility system has additional features that will be detailed in upcoming posts. Additionally, a new system will allow players to mark themselves as either Defensive or Offensive. An evolution of the passive mode system from GTA Online, as well as "marked for PvP" used in many MMOs like World of Warcraft, this new Playing Style system further serves to prevent griefing and unwanted PvP attacks. If you mark yourself as Offensive, then practically nothing changes - you continue to play as you have until now. Marking yourself as Defensive, however, alters a number of factors. Defensive players cannot be lassoed, critical hits can't be dealt against them, headshots incur the same damage as body shots and attacking them will incur major Hostility penalties. As a Defensive player, you may not lock onto other players, nor can they lock onto you, and any hostile action on your part will automatically switch you to Offensive and incur penalties. This way if you set yourself to Defensive, griefing you will be more trouble than it's worth. Players can also expect content expansion beyond the odd game mode here and there. Both the Land Of Opportunities mission-chain will continue with more quests focused on Jessica LeClerk, and the Free Roam Missions will also be increased in number. New random encounters will also be added, such as ambushes or various NPCs in need of help. The Daily Challenges system will be overhauled, removing any challenge that indirectly encouraged griefing in free roam, as well as challenges that require unavailable content. A new weapon returning from Red Dead Redemption is also on its way - keep an eye out for the LeMat Revolver, coming soon. These features will be implemented is a major Beta Update coming sometime later this spring. The post Rockstar Details Upcoming Red Dead Online Features appeared first on RDR2.org. I would like the option. I mean even if the doggo only serves as a camp guard or for alerting us someone is approaching.1 point

By the sounds of it, you’ll be able to set yourself to free aim as well as prevent others from auto-aiming you, while still keeping your auto-aim for hunting/PVE. You’ll also be immune to the cheap headshot and avoid getting bounty or aggressive player status for fighting back. All without being completely immune to those who really want to pick a fight with you. Sounds about as close as you can get to catering towards all tastes while still keeping the player base in the same lobbies... I’m excited to see how it all works out in practice.1 point

Sure they would. You'd get arrested, taken to what passed as a court trial back then, and depending who had the judge in their pocket you'd win or lose. Wild west wasn't as unlawful as most people like to think. The famous shootout at the OK Corral with the Cowboys and Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp, they were all arrested and taken to court. Court lasted over a month. Can you imagine going in every week day to hear witnesses from both sides for 30 days? Standing your ground doesn't just mean stooping to their level and talking back, and killing them. It's knowing when and where to stand and fight. And just fyi, there was no stand your ground laws back then like we have now. There wasn't an actual written law in the US until about 2005. Most states up to that point used the English common law for self defense by reasonable force, so there were different interpretations of that over the years and for the various situations. The laws in 2005 didn't change that much either. The English law and the laws in the states used now say you're legal to stand your ground and use deadly force when warranted as long as you're not breaking the law during the act. So you guys argue, he shoots you shoot, you live he dies, yep you should go to jail until you're cleared for self defense, if that's what it was. The people in the game aren't stupid, they did a great job with the AI in this game. Townsfolk and lawmen remember you, you have a run in before in town, maybe accidentally shot someone when trying to greet them, and then this happens (tossing examples out there). not broken that i see. You can make them forget you by changing your full outfit, your saddle, and your horse before going back into that town. Or wait a few in-game days and they'll forget, 3 or 4 days i think it was.1 point

R* doesn't get it.. And this is starting to grow tiresome. Hardcore/Free aim Free roam.. Invite only..lobbies. Simple easy solution to everyones problems. They instead prefer to pile on band aid after band aid. So just by reading that.. I can easily put myself in a griefers mindset and see the loop holes. Start a mission = Griefing spree. Defensive passive mode.. Perfect for cheap shotting. I don't NEED R*s damn bullsh*t.. I don't need bounty hunters. I don't need 'punishment' against players. Il do it my ****ing self. Hell I can do it blind folded thanks the damn auto aim. R* is trying to suck the life and soul of this game... Infact I think being a griefer at this point seems like my new calling. Sure does seem like all the real action is in being bad... Maybe its time I turn heel. Just out of spite.. Like holy sh*t.. What the **** does R* expect me to do in this game without hostile players?1 point

Thanks @Azzimovve. I added the state of the update news to the first post in this thread. I'm tempted to get rid of all the remaining back and forth about the servers being down yesterday just to tidy this thread up and keep the discussion about the update. Me too. Also like the fact that they are fixing the bounty system for those who defend themselves which was another big concern for folks who wanted the ability to at least fight back without being falsely labeled. Curious to see how it all shakes out. ......of course with the knowledge that this is still all a work in progress. I do like the direction they're going however.1 point
