  2. The game lets you put animals, pelts on other peoples horses and also bodies. I had a troll who was particularly annoying ... So I followed him to Valentine, I quietly stabbed someone and put the body on his horse while he was in the gunsmith. I then shot a few rounds in the air to get people to notice the area. He came out to find himself wanted for murder, tons of witnesses and a full on assault by the law.

  3. MOONSHINERS: A NEW FRONTIER PURSUITCOMING DECEMBER 13TH TO RED DEAD ONLINE In an America not yet fully governed by law, opportunity abounds for the lawless - wild open space ready and waiting for the ruthless and ambitious to carve a new future for themselves. How better to make your fortune than to become a black-market Moonshiner, the all-new Frontier Pursuit coming to Red Dead Online on December 13th. Establish your own bootlegging business in this new Specialist Role – an ideal fit for players progressing along the Trader path or anyone seeking a property to call their own. Unlock unique role-specific skills as you perfect your distillation methods, avoid the law, and put rival peddlers out of business. If you’re lucky, you might survive long enough to open your own speakeasy. Any active Trader who has completed a sell mission or reached Rank 5 in the Trader progression will receive an introduction via Cripps to meet the infamous Maggie Fike - an experienced bootlegger with the scars to prove it - down at Emerald Ranch. Maggie’s got the connections and the knowledge to help you get your business up and running. Purchase a Moonshining Shack and you will be on your way. To passers-by, the Shack is an unassuming dwelling, the main floor acting as a front with all the details of an ordinary homestead. The basement, however, is where you'll ultimately get down to business. Owning and operating the Moonshine business is just part of your role. You’ll also work with Maggie through a series of story missions to be played solo or cooperatively as you help her get revenge on those who tried to take her down. As you grow the business (and eliminate a rival operation), you’ll learn new recipes and techniques that help make your moonshine the best by a country mile. You'll also have the opportunity to set up your own underground Bar serving your own shine, with customizable décor and the option to add a country band complete with dance floor to entertain your friends and clientele. Look for much more to come to Red Dead Online alongside Moonshiners on December 13th - including Outlaw Pass No. 2, new Moonshiner role unlocks, the new Navy Revolver, additional clothing options and an increase in the amount of outfit slots in your Wardrobe.

  5. I'm going to preface this with the disclaimer that i am NOT talking about anyone in particular, here on these forums or elsewhere. But it is very comical/sad watching all of these folks "grind" through all of the content as fast as possible, to unlock every feature and reward, before everyone else... and then spend the next 6 months complaining because they are bored with it and expect R* to have the next update ready to go, NOW! (and it's R*s fault that they ran out of content) I'm not bored, I'm in no hurry. I hunt and trade for a while, go catch a bounty or two, stop by the saloon and play a few hands of poker, maybe go find a treasure, clear a few camps if I spot them, craft a bit at camp and pet the dog... etc. I guess, I just don't get the need to "grind" and certainly don't get "grinding" to "complete" everything as soon as humanly possible. It just seems so very counter to "fun". As for me, it will take me probably months to complete all three roles. And I am absolutely, 100% fine with that. Obviously, ymmv.

  7. Ive been working on this for sometime. Its it very near complete and I tried to be as accurate as possible. Just needed to get it posted before the holiday vacation. Current prices on all animal carcus, pelts and parts as of update 1.05 Please let me know if this is not showing up correctly. My original had links for every animal to the rockstar compendium and everything but its just too much for the upload I guess.

  8. Hello all, Tired of getting your face blown off while skinning that 3-Star cougar? Are you sick of having to check your map for enemy players while reeling in a 20lb Muskie? If so you are not alone. Luckily...RED_DEADMAN understands your frustration and is here to help. As a rank 110 player, I have enough experience with griefers to know that sometimes...you just need a little extra firepower. That's where I come in. What I offer? I offer my time and my rifle. I will accompany you on your adventures and ensure that hostile players and their crew do not get within a lethal distance of you or your posse. Ensuring the safety of you and your friends during any expeditions(hunting, fishing , stranded missions etc. What does my service cost? Absolutely nothing. (I do however accept tips in the form of animal carcus/pelts added to my horse....but not required). I am in this more for the experience and to meet new players. How does it work? Simply send me a friend request on PSN with a message saying "RDS" (Or basically anything else you want that let's me know you are from the forums). If I am available at that time I will join your online session. I will not join your posse for security reasons, unless you are willing to assume the risk. I will remain in your general vicinity and protect you at all costs unless your safety requires me to leave the area. Leaving you free to focus on enjoying the day. What about chat? I will accept invites to your party but will not utilize a microphone unless your safety requires me to do so...or if you have special instructions during my term of employment. This service is for PS4 players only and intended to be more fun that serious...although everything previously stated is 100% accurate.

  11. There always seems to be enough grumbling about this or that in the game. Last night, I enjoyed a nearly perfect evening so, I thought I would share. I spawned into Saint Denis without much thought about what the night would hold, except I knew I had a brand new treasure map that I had just won upon turning 80. My only real goal for the evening was to take it easy and go collect on the treasure. So, I spawn in, head over to the Mail Station to pick up my catalog purchases and stock up on ammo, etc. when suddenly... "YOU HAVE BEEN TARGETED FOR ASSASSINATION" I've seen this movie before, so I jump on my horse immediately and head straight out of town, in the opposite direction from the bright red dot and at full speed. I get caught in the marshes and the assassin is eventually able to catch up to me with about 2 minutes left on the timer. He fires at me while riding at full speed and misses. Then I hit a fallen log on the side of the road and go head first into the dirt. He's got me, dead to rights. As I am slowly picking myself back up, he's right on top of me. And then foolishly, he decides to lasso me instead of just shoot me dead. I break the lasso immediately, ignore the horse, and make like I am going to take off running by jumping into the trees and bushes beside the road. His second mistake, he takes the bait and rides full ahead into the trees and brush behind me. Only, I'm not really running. I've drawn both sawed off shotguns and he rides right into them. Bang, Bang, Dead. I see him respawn and head back in my direction, but by then, I am long gone and he's out of time. Victory. So, back to my treasure hunt... it's half way across the country, now. Off I go. Only, there's a poker game going on in Flatneck Station which is on my rout. So, I might as well stop in and play a few hands. First couple, I lose a little or fold out. Then I get a great Hand, Aces over Kings, same suit. I win the big pot and and have almost 40 dollars on the table. Settle up. Take my leave with a smile and head out back for treasure. Victory. I finally get to the area where the treasure is supposed to be and there's a random encounter there. A young lady's horse has died, stranding her in the desert. Of course, I offer to help. It's an ambush! I have to fight my way clear of a a couple of dozen attackers in 2-3 waves. But they're no match for me and I enjoy looting each and every one. Victory. I finally get to the treasure and discover $150 bucks plus a few trinkets. Victory! As I am riding out, the young lady from before is back. Same dead horse. Same sob story. Only this time, she isn't playing me and really needs a ride. So, I take her to meet her brother at the Fort, drop her off and collect the reward. Victory. I thought about playing a bit more, but it was a work night and everything had been so much fun and had worked out in my favor at every turn, so I just took it as a "perfect evening" that didn't need me hanging around to get spoiled. And I logged out, very happy with my evening adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed the night. I hope my little tale didn't bore anyone too much and if you read this far, thank you. I hope you guys all have great nights like these as well, just not when you're coming after me. Cheers!

  14. Wait ..what in the blue hell are you talking about? Joking..kinda. What players are you talking to? Tons of players got to high levels the legit way. I am one of them. Don't make blanket untrue statements. Seems very judgmental and kinda foolish. Tons of peoples level up in this game without being a lame ass. You must play with people like that. I'm sorry. And you can grind solo or in a posse. Not very hard. If you hate Free Roam, just grind Showdown. Solo players can still level up as fast as posses. Not that hard. I only run with a posse when I want to, not because I have to. I actually prefer running missions solo at times. Sometimes I just need quite.

This isn't Marvel Heroes Omega As I am so fond of telling my kids, "The United States of America does not negotiate with terrorists". Begging your pardon, m'Lord, I doubt you saw down the length of your nose upon us humble peasants from atop your high horse: I suggest Fortnite. I somehow suspect that is not a tender, gentle love.

  17. If you are playing on PS4 and get griefed, when you respawn immediately crouch so that your griefer cannot see you. Pull up the player list with your left directional button. Locate the griefer on the list and click on them. Choose the option to see their PSN profile. Once there, choose the "..." option at the right and click on "Block". Log out and log back into the game. You will never see that player ever again. I did that on the first two days of playing. I blocked about 10 people. Now I am on servers without any di*ks, I have been playing all day today -- everyone is cool. The PvP griefers are a tiny asinine minority. At least so far, until R* puts in a more concrete way to deal with them like private lobbies, this method at least eliminates the griefers after one event with you. Like I said, after a couple of days and about 10 griefers getting blocked, I've been able to play peacefully all day today without anyone causing me any problems. I've had plenty of folks in my vicinity, but since I've been blocking the "must kill evah thing ah see" crowd, all of my fellow players have been peaceful and considerate.

  21. So, I usually send Rockstar a note once a week after a Tuesday update bothering them about the current state of the game, pestering them about communicating better with us. I had said to them, you put out a newswire weekly yet say nothing about the number 1 question from nearly every player currently playing the online game, when are you goign to fix this issue? what are you trying? when will you try it? why wont you try these suggestions,? etc.... and I usually get the exact same reply, stay tuned, we are aware, etc.... Well after a lengthy back and forth with them last week that lasted til today, after explaining to them that fixing gold glitches and ignoring animal spawns is discouraging for players, preventing solo lobbys yet immediately fixing a duplication glitch isnt a good look. anyway, my last reply from Rockstar came this morning, in it they said this, I am going to copy paste their words. " we would like to inform you that these issues will be fix along with new patch," Now, we were talking about Tuesday's weekly updates just before this, so to me and I said this to them, it looks as though he is saying this weeks update may contain a bug fix for the animal spawns and server issues. I cant be sure obviously for all I know he meant a patch that is coming down the road or in a certain amount of time, but it does give me hope. It is the first time they ever said anything other than the same old nonsense, stay tuned, we are aware of the problem etc.. I had made suggestions, create a "Hunting mode" and allow players to join a session that is capped with 12 players and a 48 hour in game time frame, then booting them back to the server they were on prior to starting the mode, or just limit servers to 12 and see what happens, etc.. as well as several other ideas we floated, but in the end, they never tried anything, rather they are working on it on their end and hopefully will roll it out to us very soon, I feel like it is too good to be true that it will be tomorrow so I am not getting too excited, but it might be. Let's wait and see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow does bring to those of us on XbX the new added content for both online and story mode that pc and ps4 got a month ago, so there is that, but who knows, perhaps we will be lucky and they will also roll out a fix for the animal spawns, fingers crossed.

  23. Funny that I predicted in the other topic, that instead of fixing issues and improving anything. They would just add more clothing and a new pvp mode. The ****ING ANIMALS!!!! WTF This is getting tiresome. Whats the point of these damn 'Free Aim' pvp modes, treating them like special pvp modes. There needs to be a FLAT OUT FREE AIM mode for everything, especially FREE ROAM. And if R* wants players to even remotely care about pvp modes, they need HOSTED lobbies with options.. with private lobby options. PVP in RD O could be extremely popular, if they stopped treating it like they do. And the role playing players need private lobbies. And at this point, theres enough clothing in this game to last for years. *Hudawg still beating the dead horse? Nope, im still waiting for the horse to wake up..:D

I hated the random senseless psycho killer thing going on. I see much less of this now and much more purposeful conflict. I’m happy with these changes and look forward to even more.

  27. Well thats your opinion and you are entitled to it, I dont have to agree, I think more players agree with me than you and Rockstar obviously agreed as they made severe changes to the game just for this reason, but that doesnt mean I am right or you are wrong, many people will have many different expectations, and ways to play the game. BUT if someones way of playing ruins someone else's game then maybe they should re-think their play style because although you dont agree, my game style will never interupt what you want to do in game I respect others and I treat people the way I want to be treated. This is way more than "just a game" it is a new style of game, and it can be really great for those of us who appreciate the attention to detail Rockstar added into the game to make it immersive and realistic. If a player isnt hearing anyone on the mic, thats fine, you dont have to hear me to not shoot me, lol shoot your friends, shoot others who want to engage with you, but leave players minding their own business alone, you will never be right with any excuse you can make for causing others to have a negative experience, it is not good for anyone and there is no excuse for it there is no benefit for you to kill innocent people and now the way the game is it will cost you, and the person you attack will have the advantage. Do anything you want as long as it doesnt effect others, simply put there are many ways to shoot your guns in this game so you dont need to go out of your way to shoot at people just because they pass by, that seems to me like if a player does that maybe their bored, and then I ask how can that be? there are stranger missions, story missions, encounters, achievements, daily challenges, pvp modes horse races, fishing competitions, etc.. I mean seriously you can do a dozen other things that actually pay you in xp, gold, and cash, whereas shooting a person who is trying to get to a butcher gives you nothing but a bounty and an aggravated player who was trying to do what HE wanted until you came along. The people who enjoy causing that aggravation and do it only for that reason are griefers and unwanted in the game by all, even those who like to mix it up, I dont mind a gun fight, or a fist fight, but I dont like being shot in the back when I am not looking or ready and doing something like skinning an animal or fishing You suggesting who should and shouldnt play this game is ridiculous, just play the game and have fun, dont worry about philosophy and strategy and what everyone else should be doing. If you enjoy bothering people then so be it, the game is set up against that type of player these days and people are pretty well set up to defend themselves against it, it will cost you money to do it now, while the person you kill looses nothing but a few minutes so, whatever man.

  28. This is the problem. I know a lot of people (myself included) who, just like CosmoKramer, it sounds like, run those two cards specifically to give a chance against the 'random headshotter' (to avoid the term 'griefer'). In fact, the only passive protection you have against those players is Never Without One. Bad people (AKA A$$hats) use the card because it is, all ways up, the most powerful card in the game. I really don't think it's sustainable to argue that NWO use = A$$hat player, unless you're arguing that everyone's an A$$hat. Maybe your actions are self fulfilling? If someone randomly headshots me, and knocks my hat off, I will then go after them until they're dead (usually several times, to make a point). So, we have the following scenario: - I ride somewhere in your vicinity with my usual card loadout. - you see S&S and NWO, and despite me making no hostile move, you decide I must be an A$$hat, and shoot me. - I take exception to being attacked in a random and unprovoked fashion, and come after you, guns blazing. - You feel justified in shooting me, because I'm obviously an A$$hat, you just managed to get your retaliation in first. - I feel justified in returning fire, and in using NWO, because it protects me from (apparent) A$$hats like you who will randomly headshot me while I'm minding my own business. That's no way to live.

  29. RED DEAD ONLINE BETA UPDATENEW FEATURES AND MORE COMING FEBRUARY 26 The next set of updates and new features is set to be added to the Red Dead Online Beta on February 26th as we implement many new improvements and enhancements to the game’s open world, including a new Law and Bounty system, weapons balancing, changes to player blips on the mini-map and more. Read on for details about these changes and stay tuned next week to learn more about some of the other new content coming in this update. Player Visibility As part of our response to community feedback on how to minimize certain types of destructive player behavior, we’ve made some changes to the way player blips will appear on the map. Firstly, we’re reducing the visibility of blips over long distances – your map position won’t display to other players unless you are nearby (within 150 meters) and if you are slightly further away you will only appear when firing your weapon. Players in other towns or regions, for example, won’t be visible. This prevents players from being repeatedly targeted across the map at long distances. We’re also introducing a new system that highlights overly aggressive players. If your style of play becomes more hostile, your map position (and the position of your Posse members) will become more visible to other players with a progressively darkening dot that incrementally shifts from blue to dark red. Your visibility increases through bad deeds such as attacking and killing other players or their horses outside of a structured mode, Free Roam Mission, event or competition, and the shorter the time between bad acts, the more your visibility increases. Shift back to a more righteous path and your visibility will fade over time. We’re also introducing Posse-wide Parleys and improving Feuds. You’ll soon be able to initiate Parley that applies to your attacker’s entire Posse after just a single kill. Alternatively, if you’d rather challenge your opponent, you can initiate a Feud, Posse Feud or Leader Feud after one kill, quickly turning a dispute into a timed mini-deathmatch for rival players to fight out amongst themselves in Free Roam, earning points for each kill on the opposing player. Bounty Hunters & Law Balancing At the same time, players who have racked up high bounties will have a chance to be beset by NPC Bounty Hunters who will attempt to kill them and collect their reward. Criminal behavior will have bounty values and honor consequences that scale based on the severity of the crime. For example, killing another player can incur a higher bounty, while assaulting townsfolk or animal cruelty could give you a lesser bounty if the crime is reported, while lower level crimes like looting and ransacking will only decrease your honor. If your bounty exceeds a certain threshold and Bounty Hunters take notice, you will be wanted dead and alerted to their pursuit. The higher your bounty, the greater your value and the more difficult the pursuit becomes for you and your Posse. Daily Challenges We will also be adding a variety of Daily Challenges to take on across the Red Dead Online Beta. Complete individual objectives that cover every aspect of life on the frontier to earn Gold Nuggets and XP. Challenges will range from foraging for herbs, selling items at a Fence, hunting and skinning animals, clearing hideouts, winning Feuds and so much more. These Daily Challenges will continue to expand and evolve over time bringing specialty challenges and rewards, streak bonuses and more. Other Fixes and More Your feedback has been invaluable so please keep it coming. In addition to these updates we are planning to address several additional changes based on community feedback received thus far - select weapons will be re-balanced including the Varmint Rifle, which will have its accuracy brought more in line with other longarm weapons; voice chat will be reduced to work at closer proximity, and while fixes to horse cargo are numerous and ongoing we plan to introduce some improvements to making pelts and carcasses more persistent after death or respawning. We will have more details on additional content in the February 26th update next week. We are excited about the future of Red Dead Online and look forward to sharing lots more in the weeks and months ahead. Meanwhile, there are chances to earn more XP to rank up ahead of February 26th. Playing in a Posse will bring benefits like earning increased XP in Free Roam Missions and Free Roam Events. Posse up this week to earn twice as much increased XP on these activities, and next week earn 20% more XP across all activities in the Red Dead Online Beta. https://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/60840/Red-Dead-Online-Beta-Update?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=rdobeta-update-02122019&utm_content=newswire

  32. Simply answered this game isn't Fortnite/Pubg or a Battlefield/COD game where it's all about PvP. If that's what you are seeking there are game modes specifically for that. This game allows you to immerse yourself into the world of Red Dead, I'm going to assume you never played the first Red Dead where there were Posse's of all types in there as we well as those who engage heavily with a bit of Roleplay in them (meetings, assassinations, alliances, wars, etc.). Also people Griefing is completely different from PvP. Literally the other day I was killed 4 times while trying to fish, firs time I brushed it off and didn't retaliate after the 3rd time I wanted to see when he would grow tired of killing a non violent person who just wanted to fish. After the 4th I got annoyed and sniped him, he then ran away and left the server. This kid didn't just kill me for the sake of PvP he completely "griefed" by just spawn killing me as I minded my own business and clearly didn't want to participate in PvP at the moment. Now the other issue is, it isn't a matter of just PvPing which I wouldn't mind engaging in from time to time, but the fact that the servers are all Auto Aim where you can literally be running, horseback riding etc.. and the aggressor literally just has to aim and tap the analog stick a little up and shoot with an instant kill doesn't seem fun to me. Now if Free Aim was the main aiming setting then I would be okay with someone randomly shooting me which would at least give me a fighting chance. People don't like being ran up on and instantly get killed with a headshot by someone going 20 mph on a horse, or constantly spawn killed with an easy headshot. In short Free Roams aren't about PvPing, people like to PvP and others simply don't. Which is why my Gang doesn't kill random players unless they're hostile. There are game modes, missions etc for PvP in the game and then there are other games out there where you can go and kill people over and over again, once again RDR online isn't that. I hope I don't come across as rude or condescending in any way it's hard to tell the text tone of a post lol.

  34. Whaaat? Whaaaat does this even mean? Theres nothing overly complicated about this game. And the pace of the game is up to to the player. You can't complain about not making 'progress' if you stop playing the game. IMO this is the best game i've played in years.

  35. You seem to think this game is all about grinding.. While its just one aspect of the game Myself and friend where just hunting yesterday to stock up on food. In comes a four person posse and starts killing us. So we started killing them back. Basically we slaughtered each other over and over again, for over an hour. We actually tried to leave the area after 20 mins, but they killed our horses. After out horses got merked we decided to just keep killing them. Now.. we actually enjoy killing players (hate the auto aim tho).. But we stuck around for that one hour battle. People who don't care for pvp would probably have had to quit the lobby. Forcing pvp on to players who have no interest in it... isn't fun for non pvp folks.

  39. Hey there, folks. I know we’re all quite jazzed about the game releasing soon, and it’s going to be awesome! Once it does, we’re expecting this forum to get rather busy with lots and lots of talk about the game, its ins-and-outs, and the best/worst things about it. HOWEVER, it should also be considered that many of our forum members will be either unwilling or downright unable to buy the game at its release price. So, they may choose to spend the meantime watching online play videos and reading up on strategies and multiplayer stories here on the forums until they can get their hands on a copy. All this being said – you ARE free to TALK about ANYTHING YOU WANT about the game on this forum. HOWEVER, you CANNOT post any SPOILER VIDEO FOOTAGE. AT ALL. Also: If you're going to MENTION (in text) STORY MODE OR OTHER SPOILERS, our only request is that you use a handy-dandy tool we have here called the SPOILER tool. Here’s a helpful GIF to show you how it works: That’s how you do it. Basically, anything you write about that spoils anything of RDR2, please use this filter. This way, ANYONE can read your posts and still not get the intricacies spoiled. But what exactly IS a “spoiler,” you ask? Spoilers are reveals in the storyline or other important information about the game with dramatic effect. For example: “In story mode, you start with a pistol and six bullets.” – That’s not really a spoiler. That’s more of a gameplay dynamic. No hearts should be broken by learning THIS info on the forums. “Wow! It makes so much sense that Dutch was secretly in love with Abigail before Marston won her heart!” – THAT, friends, is a spoiler. (and a made-up example. I have no clue what happens in this game.) Remember, this applies to posts AND comments! If you click-open a spoiler and want to reply with the same (or another) spoiler, you’ll need to also use the Spoiler tool. So, you have the discernment, you have the tools, and you have the talent. With this neato tool, we give you the freedom to write anything you like without taking anything away from others. As of this posting, this rule is in effect. As the game ages, we may choose to rescind it at a later date – ‘cause, by a certain time, if you STILL haven’t played the game, that’s on you, chief. Sorry ‘bout it. IN THE MEANTIME, we have to impose some regulations: IF YOU encounter a spoiler irresponsibly posted by another forum member, please use the “Report Post” button IMMEDIATELY, and we will address it. We DO understand there may be a slip-up on this policy. If you realize you accidentally posted a story mode spoiler, please Edit the post and use the Spoiler tool. Now, we gotta get into the heavy stuff: If it is found by a moderator that you posted a spoiler without using the tool, or an uncovered spoiler you posted is reported to us, your post WILL be edited or deleted, and the following will occur: First offense: public shaming in the thread by a moderator or admin - NO warning points issued Second offense: public shaming in the thread by a moderator or admin AND warning points issued, as well as a possible temp-ban from the forums Third offense: further warning points will be issued, along with a temp or possible permaban from the forums So, let’s all enjoy playing this game, talking about this game, and the forums. Just use the Spoiler tool, and all will be right with the world. Adios, - Skunk

  41. .....and here's the article in full regarding the interview for the lazy folks who don't want to use the link. : Villains, lawmen, businesses, photography, and heists – the future of Red Dead Online, a Rockstar interview By Kirk McKeand, Friday, 27 September 2019 15:23 GMT Looking at it now, GTA Online is almost unrecognisable as the multiplayer mode that launched back in 2013. There’s an unreasonable amount to do in Los Santos these days, but it took Rockstar a while to get there, to figure out exactly what GTA Online was. It turns out it’s not that much different to the single-player: a world where money is king, where your status is dictated by what you own; a physics sandbox full of barely contained carnage. It’s coming up on a year since Red Dead Online launched into beta, but it’s already starting to develop its own identity. For myself and many others, much of the enjoyment comes from simply existing in this vibrant, expansive world. To find any excuse to live there. With the Frontier Update adding three new roles – Trader, Bounty Hunter, and Collector – Rockstar provided all the excuse we needed to meander across the dusty plains, verdant fields, and the snow-capped mountains of the Old West once more. “Red Dead for us is an opportunity to try something a bit different, try something new, and really let players have an experience of living in this 19th century America,” lead open world designer Scott Butchard tells me. “Which for us, it’s definitely a different pace to what GTA offers. It’s a lot slower, it’s a lot more intimate, and we just really wanted to build up slowly bit for bit, so the player really feels progression. Whereas GTA is much more faster paced.” Rockstar plans to keep adding to this experience, both building on those roles we’ve already been given and adding some more, along with new features, missions, and surprises, but all while ensuring there’s a clear throughline. “We don’t want the player to feel too overwhelmed too quickly,” lead online production associate Katie Pica explains. “So from their first day all the way to, say, the latest update, we want to make sure that there’s progression there, for every player.” Rockstar doesn’t call Red Dead Online an MMO, but its approach to introducing elements is similar. Anyone who plays these three new roles and progresses through them will be immediately ready for what comes next, while any new players will start at this first step, the Frontier Update. This way Rockstar can keep that sense of progression the same for each player and prevent new players from feeling overwhelmed. “We don’t want to leave anything behind, we’ll continue to look to add to the roles in future, like we’ve done with the Legendary Bounties we’ve just released for Bounty Hunter,” Butchard says. “Little things, even new collections, and then we add new roles as well.” One example of this is the Trader role, which currently allows players to turn in animal carcasses at their camp, which an NPC converts into produce. Once you have enough produce, you can take part in supply runs to generate money. This role is the first step on the business ladder Rockstar has planned. More opportunities are coming in later updates to expand your empire. “We wanted the player to start at their camp,” Pica explains. “We thought that was a good fit. You know, we don’t want you to jump up the ladder too soon, whereas we put high-end businesses into GTA quite quickly. We actually want the player to start on that first business, and then keep going. We’ve got plans for other business ventures that the player could do. We just want each one that we add to feel distinct from the next one. So it’s not like we’re going to say, ‘Okay, here’s the Trader, now everything is the same.’ We want each one of these to feel different. We want players to look back at what they’ve achieved over time, and say, ‘That’s where I started, and now look where I am’. “We’ve mentioned before that we’d like players and their characters to experience the journey from running a fledgling business at camp to becoming some kind of industrialist, so it’s just a question of creating a fun and logical path from one to the other with the right amount of steps in between. Right now, players are running a business out of the camp with Cripps, as well as developing the camp itself. But the idea is that at some point, new opportunities may be too big to be sustained inside the camp, so maybe it needs to move to another property. At that point, there could be multiple kinds of business players can look at running simultaneously. But none of this is set in stone, we’re still absorbing the feedback from players from these initial roles and we will see how we can improve upon these ideas as we go.” One thing that’s slightly more complex is the addition of properties. Part of Red Dead’s charm is the lifestyle – living off the land, cooking up a kill, and brewing coffee by your campfire. If every player can suddenly purchase a homestead and carve out a portion of the frontier for themselves, will this detract from the nomadic lifestyle and stop players roaming the wilds? “We want to introduce properties at some point in the future,” Butchard admits. “Again, part of the reason is we don’t want to jump the shark too soon. We want players to live like an outlaw, live in the Wild West. We don’t want to abandon the camp. We want the camp to be something that you take care of, and we want the expansions to update it, and you get your own distinct feel. It’s your own camp, this is my camp, it’s their camp. We don’t want to leave that behind too quickly.” The Frontier Update added a bunch of improvements to the camp itself, allowing you to adopt different styles, purchase a stew pot to share a meal with your posse, and even buy a canine companion, which, by the way, the developers say they’d like to let you take out on missions with you in the future. Sometimes you might even see your NPC buddy, Cripps, humming a tune through his harmonica. Rockstar is attempting to recreate those memorable campside moments from the single-player in this lawless online counterpart. All the changes so far are an attempt to make Red Dead Online more like its single-player story, with the introduction of random events out in the world a major first step towards this. The first three roles, while designed so that it’s possible to play them all almost simultaneously, were introduced as a way for you to be able to define your character, just like those camp personalisation options, to make your own protagonist that stars in your own story, whatever story you want to tell. “We felt the initial ones were just a great starting point, because they do complement each other,” Pica says. “Like having the high-action gunslinging for the Bounty Hunter, the world exploration for the Collector, and then business management for the Trader. We love the fact that they can actually all be played in tandem, and on path, en route to say capturing a bounty, you might find a collectible. But obviously players can also just focus on one role, if that’s how they want to play it. They can fully embody that life of the Bounty Hunter if they choose. And going forward, we want players to feel as connected as possible to their character. We’ve got lots of ideas about how we can develop that further.” Each Role provides its own unique rewards as a way to show other players where your focus lies. If you see a distant player spinning their guns and wearing an eyepatch, you can tell at a glance that they’re a Bounty Hunter. People have approached Rockstar’s games this way since GTA Online launched. You only have to search ‘GTA roleplay’ or ‘Red Dead roleplay’ videos on YouTube to see players fully embracing a more simulated life within these virtual worlds. “The roleplaying community, they’re playing GTA, they are amazing,” online producer Tarek Hamad says. “And it’s exciting to watch how they interact with the world and the experiences they are creating there. We always try and pay attention to what the entire community’s doing, but I think with the roles that we’ve introduced, we’re doing something a little bit differently there, and maybe stepping towards that.” “Yeah, we always wanted to include role-playing elements,” Butchard adds. “That’s something we were really interested in doing. Something that seems to fit with the tone of Red Dead Online is embodying that character, that person who lives in this Wild West.” At the moment, Rockstar is paying close attention to how players are engaging with the three roles. The developer has lots of ideas for what may come next, but whatever that is will be, in part, influenced by how the community takes to what is already there. “We want to scratch that itch for all different types of players,” Butchard explains. “There’s so many different types – those who like playing a villain, or those who want to play the hero. We’ve got to look at that as well, and try and conform to that, if we can, with new builds. Let’s just say that the idea of playing dishonorably may not necessarily be limited to activities related to Bounty Hunting. Right now in Frontier Pursuits we don’t have a role that focuses on a dishonorable path, but each role works with the players ability to manage their honor in Red Dead Online, and it’s something we want to keep building on – so the opportunity is there for future roles that let the player lean even further into their honorable and dishonorable side.” One of the thrilling things about Red Dead Online is seeing the silhouette of a distant player watching you from a distance as you try to turn in your pelts as a Trader. The shootouts are exciting, but somehow the threat of a potential shootout manages to be even more tense. When Red Dead Online launched you couldn’t gallop five minutes down a mudpath without someone trying to punt you over a cliff edge or shoot the hat from your head. Rockstar has made a bunch of improvements in this area, however, making sure player blips are only visible on the minimap within a certain proximity, so players can’t actively hunt strangers down by simply bringing up the map. It means every distant rider could be friend or foe, and this small change makes the world feel more dynamic. So how does this approach to combating griefing gel with that vision of the future, where players are free to roleplay villains without ruining the experience for others? Rockstar says it needs to incentivise both honourable and dishonourable players from a roleplaying perspective and carefully balance the pros and cons of these potentially opposing factions. “Utilising the bounty system, the Honor system, and tying that with our roles in the future where the player can be a villain, could join a gang, you know?” Butchard says. “Or decide to take the side of a lawman, if we did something like that.” “When planning future roles and other content, we think about the world in key areas: exploration, capitalism, wildlife and nature, pastimes, and bounty hunting style activities, which are an offshoot of the law, depending on how honorable you play,” Pica adds. “We love the idea that at some point a highly ranked bounty hunter could become a lawman. So far the roles have touched on a few of those ideas, but there’s a lot more to do.” Another potential area Rockstar could expand on with a future role is photography, which “is something we’d love to do”, I’m told. If done right, this is something I’m even more excited about than lawmen versus outlaws. I can already imagine packing warm clothes, trekking into the mountains, and attempting to get a perfect shot of a grazing moose. Maybe we could get more money for better compositions, or depending on what’s happening in photos. I’m imagining a system similar to Dead Rising, but, like, 100 percent more chill. “Yeah this is such a cool area,” Butchard agrees. “Photography and allowing players to capture their adventures and moments is really important to us, and it’s something we’ve already established the community love. It’s been amazing seeing posses come together for professional photographs thanks to the latest update. We’re really proud of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the world we made, and we obviously have the handheld camera in single-player which is also available in Red Dead Online with players having a lot of fun capturing Arthur in spectacular fashion, sometimes hilariously so, and we have seen that continue in Online – we want to keep building on this and make sure players continue chronicling their experiences as Online grows.” Throughout our interview, Rockstar mentions how much the developers have their ears to the ground. They’ve heard your complaints about not being able to mix and match role outfits and they’re seeing if there’s anything they can do, though they’re slightly hampered by some technical limitations there. But remember when you all wanted ponchos? Now you have ponchos. If it’s possible, it will happen at some point. So, what about that other feature the community keeps calling out for – heists? “That’s another one we’ve definitely discussed, and we’ve batted around ideas of how that could work,” Butchard says. “It’s an exciting prospect, as well. I think we need to take a look at it once we’ve moved past of this initial stage of these roles, and how we’re going to develop these in the now, and see where we can take the heists in the future. We don’t want to jump too far, too soon. We want everyone to experience the same journey, not too quickly. We don’t want them at the finish line too soon, wanting the next thing.” Heists fit the vision of Red Dead Online so it’s highly likely they will be introduced at some point. As the developers reiterate throughout this interview, player feedback is constantly monitored. One thing they’ve already learned from this feedback and from the in-game statistics is that PvP isn’t anywhere near as popular as free roam and cooperative activities. That means co-op additions like heists are much more pressing than a new deathmatch, for example, but Rockstar has to implement them at the right time to keep that sense of progression, that personal story of growth, from living off the land to walking around Saint Denis with gold bars tumbling out of your satchel. “PvP will always be there, and we’ll never forget about it,” Hamad says. “It’s just, we’ve definitely seen that same shift towards playing cooperatively. Or even just competing together against the environment. So we’ve definitely seen a shift away from players doing that. It’s a good thing. We’re also going to find ways for players to play competitively in PvP and co-op play.” “Some of the latest events that we added, I think, for the Trader update, to have that supply run event, where players are actually working together to try and reach the end, and they all benefit from it – those are the type of things that we’re excited about looking into,” Pica adds. While the core of Red Dead Online is being fleshed out with these roles, are there plans for bigger expansions on the horizon? Games like Fortnite have proven that players love to see a world they’re familiar with suddenly change, and there seems to be possibilities for this baked into Red Dead Online already. We’ve seen players boundary break into an untextured version of Mexico from Red Dead Redemption, and the single-player has a whole other, albeit much smaller, map in its Guarma location – perhaps these could extend the world of Red Dead Online at some point in the future. “It’s not in the plans right now, because there’s still so much we can do with the world as it currently is, as we’ve touched on before,” Butchard says. “We’re building that foundation just now. So no plans just at the moment for that.” It’s not something Rockstar would rule out entirely, however, and the same goes for zombies, which some players have seemingly been finding hints about in the past few weeks. “It’s not something that we’re focused on right now,” Hamad admits. “We’ve obviously just released Frontier Pursuits, so our focus is building on top of that and expanding the player’s experience in the world at the moment. But you know, we never say never, so we’ll have to see where the future goes.” “Anyone who’s taken a detour off the beaten path in Red Dead Redemption 2 will know the world has quite a few unexplained phenomena, and that’s something we’re keen to continue with in Red Dead Online, but we don’t have anything specific to share on that right now,” Butchard adds. “Undead Nightmare was one incredibly fun idea we did with the original Red Dead Redemption, and we’ve been having fun with GTA Online every year at Halloween, but there’s so many possibilities and opportunities there that we haven’t begun to dig into just yet.” If you’re hoping for single-player DLC, however, you might be disappointed. Rockstar is currently focused on expanding Red Dead Online, content with the huge single-player that already exists in the main story of Red Dead Redemption 2. “We’ve said it before, but we all love single-player games, and Red Dead Redemption 2’s absolutely massive story and equally massive epilogue are hopefully evidence of that,” Hamad explains. “The team’s ambitions for Red Dead Redemption 2 were sky high in every way, and when we are building worlds of that scale, the single-player experience almost always leads the way. Our ambitions for our online games are just as high, and with Red Dead Online we are continuing to build and expand to match the world we created for Red Dead Redemption 2’s story, not just with the roles but other activities, new random events, characters to meet, new ways to engage with the world and further inhabit your character, as well as trying to improve the overall experience.” With Red Dead Online’s future looking so exciting, it’s hard to be too disappointed in the absence of single-player expansions. As I’ve mentioned before on the site, Red Dead Online’s Frontier Update is a promising hint at the future of Online, a solid foundation for what’s next and the perfect excuse to roam the Wild West once more. Maybe we’ll see you on the plains.

  42. RED DEAD ONLINE UPDATE COMING SOONFEATURING THREE UNIQUE ROLES: THE BOUNTY HUNTER, TRADER AND COLLECTOR The recent additions to Red Dead Online established the foundation for the game’s future with a range of enhancements designed to allow players to roam freely and experience the world in their own chosen way. Later this summer, the world will evolve again with the introduction of specialist roles – unique paths of progression, each providing their own experience with tailored gameplay elements and benefits that will allow players to become even more deeply connected to their character and the choices they make as they inhabit the world of Red Dead Online. This fundamental change points to the long term future of Red Dead Online – a world where players coexist in an uneasy peace, choosing to band together or striking out alone, fighting to survive in a world full of threats and opportunities as they build a life for themselves on the frontier. Read on to discover more about the first three Roles in an ongoing series: the Bounty Hunter, the Trader, and the Collector. Become a Bounty Hunter for a life of constant action on both sides of the law. A licensed Bounty Hunter can track down targets and capture – or kill, depending on how honorable you are in your pursuits. Occasionally, a nearby player with a high enough bounty can also be a designated target. Progression will unlock special items like a reinforced lasso for extra-tough targets, as well as intricate gun-spinning tricks and advanced tracking skills like the ability to use Eagle-Eye while sprinting, galloping on horseback and many other special skills, items and upgrades. The life of a Trader is perfect for burgeoning capitalists as you establish and develop a business from your Camp. Thanks to your trusty companion Cripps’ knowledge of furs, skins and butchery, you’ll be able to take on new opportunities to collect materials and produce valuable goods to sell. Increasing your skill as a Trader unlocks the ability to upgrade your Camp with a Weapons Locker, Stew Pot and even allow any canine companion to warn of impending attacks on the camp. As your business expands, you can gain new skills, improve your satchel or add new assets to your business like hunting wagons to bring in bigger hauls and much more. A Collector loves to explore the world for rare and valuable items. Look for a mystic travelling saleswoman in the wild to get started down the Collector’s path, searching for lost jewelry, rare arrowheads and other treasures to sell as individual pieces or highly valuable sets. As you progress, you will gain access to tools that help your search including Refined Binoculars, a Horse Lantern and even a Metal Detector, as well as gaining additional skills to help you seek and discover the world’s greatest rarities. As you grow into each role, it will evolve and shape your experience within the world and the characters around you, showing other players how far you’ve progressed down the path of each specialist role. You’ll also be able to play and progress across all three roles simultaneously or choose to ply your trade in just the roles of your choice. There is much more to reveal about becoming a Bounty Hunter, Trader and Collector in the weeks ahead. ADDITIONAL ENHANCEMENTS And in addition to these roles, the next update will also deliver a variety of new content and improvements aimed at enhancing all your experiences inside the world of Red Dead Online, whether within roles, competitive modes or simply exploring free roam. Substantial, across the board changes are being made to combat and movement to allow for a more responsive control system that still feels natural. Additional damage reduction to Defensive players is also on the horizon, and the game will now remember your preferred playing style (Offensive or Defensive) when you exit and relaunch the game. There will also be many more lootable items to be found throughout the world, like containers on wagons or the occasional Gold Tooth on an unfortunate soul. The next Red Dead Online update with also feature the ability to reset your character’s appearance and much, much more. Stay tuned for more details to come and check back for new weekly events in Red Dead Online.

  43. I was walking through the field at sunset, peacefully admiring the view, when all the sudden I kicked up a few ducks. I reached for my varmint rifle and.. plink, plink, plink they fell to the ground. As I walked over to pick one up I noticed a blue blip on my map. When I was turning around I saw a player with dynamite in one hand and Scofield in the other. I heard over the game in a familiar voice “My Duck”. As I flew through the air in a cart wheel of death, I accepted what I already knew... My wife needs a theme song and an entourage. I'm thinking TNT

  45. UPDATE: Please see my responses below. The issue seems as though it is resolved. As some may know, the new player blip mechanic was implemented to help mitigate the griefing issue. The idea was that trolls would not have the advantage of knowing or observing other players in other regions and outside of a relatively short range. However, as it turns out, the RDR2 App (which also shows the entire map) was not updated to mimic the range restrictions in this new update. For those who don't or can't use the App, this puts them at a huge disadvantage as anyone else with the App will know where they are but they will now essentially be blind. I don't think I have to tell you how trolls will use this to their advantage. The reason for this thread is 1) to help make people more aware of this issue. 2) to request that those affected or concerned to please submit a trouble ticket and a feedback report through the following link: https://www.rockstargames.com/reddeadredemption2/online/feedback?step=f2e50892 I submitted a trouble ticket using the Bug/Technical Issue link describing the problem as the new update mechanics not working in the App. I then submitted a response through the Feedback page describing the problem as a gross oversight that the App does not mimic the in-game anti-griefing measure and the obvious potential for exploitation. I will say that I received a canned response from the 1st tier reps when I submitted the trouble ticket. I rated them poorly and used to the link to request a response from a R* representative. We'll see how that goes. Either way, I am sure this will be an issue that many will see as a glaring oversight and wouldn't be surprised to find gaming news outlets reporting on the problem like they did with the missing NPC/wildlife bug. If this is an issue / concern for you, I would encourage and appreciate if you could take the time and submit your feedback / trouble ticket through the link provided. Thanks, Kean

  48. Since about Father's Day, my wife and son pre-ordered RDR2 for me. Since, my son who is terrible at keeping secrets has been trying to find ways to let me know. As a good father I keep pretending to be blind to the evidence or hints he keeps dropping. Well, this weekend end he got me. While the pre-order was downloading, he had opened up the que on his xbox. Minutes later he comes in and tells me his xbox was working, said he put a game in and there was some smoke and everything died. Now being a guy who has worked in electronics all my life, this isn't totally unheard of, so I run in to handle the situation, totally bull in a china shop. Get in there and sure enough RDR2 plastered across his TV screen. He then politely ask me if I see what is loading on the screen. I turn pretending to be angry, asking him why he's getting RDR2 and I didn't. Seeing him grinning from ear to ear. I couldn't hold it and started smiling myself. He then told me "Happy Father's Day and explained that I would have gotten it sooner, but Rockstar messed up big time and didn't deliver in time. " For a kid who has been trying for months to clue me in to the surprise, he finally got me.
