Should I buy a shot gun? If so which one?

Basically as the title says.

I'm not sure wether to buy a shot gun. I always see players on you tube have them so am unsure wether to I need one or not.

I try not to get to close to other players if possible. You never know there intension. Plus the amount of times I've been killed by a shotgun. I have wondered if its worth it for close quarters defence.

Then if I was to get one which would be the best to get. I'm not sure if there unlocked by level but I'm only level 24.so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

pump shotgun is the best, i have both the repeating shotgun and pump and i regret buying the repeating one.

also you could buy the sawed off, but i prefer dual revolvers tbh.

semi-shotgun is a troll gun and will be considered as a "scrub" weapon when free aim lobbies come out, if you don't plan on going to those then maybe the semi auto shotgun will be your best friend. but they're pricey and have to be higher in lvl.

tldr: PUMP SHOTGUN IS THE BEST ONE.

My 2 cents.. yeah definitely need a shotgun.

All guns for me are kind of buggy and believe me they're most likely going to Nerf some guns next update (Varmit and I think they already nerfed the Bolt with express loads) but..

I'm a fan of the repeating shotgun (probably because I bought it early) over the semi automatic or others because it has 6 shots, better damage and I believe range over the semi.

Semi was a waste of RDO$ but has the 6 shots and just loads quicker but the stats are not as good as repeating.

Slugs are kind of a waste of money but give you an extra 60 shots in a battle. Semi with slugs is good for precision but you lose damage (ie might need 2 shots instead of one)

I use the repeating shotgun for 1 shot up close high damage, quick round close fighting.  Works really well in hideout missions and it's kinda cool to watch the bodies blow apart. The other thing is you can use a shotgun as a Melee weapon in a fist fight.

Used to use it to kill wolves but makes a mess out of skins.

I too though am starting to kinda favor dual pistols in real close fighting because shotgun kind of slows you down, but 1 shot kills no headshot up close is when a shotgun is useful.

I bought both and to be honest, I (personally) stick with the repeating shotgun because it holds 6 instead of 5 rounds.

However, they're both effective enough so the only thing IMO is the value.  In that sense, the pump is a better value IMO and the first weapon that is unlocked IIRC.  Given its usefulness, I would recommend folks get it as soon as it's available to them.  .....so with that in mind, the repeater shotgun is a personal choice at that point but not really necessary IMO.

I’d definitely get the pump. I haven’t really been wanting another, other than maybe a double barrel (more so for style than anything the stats say). I bought a pair of sawn offs and use them quite a bit in show down modes. Four shotgun shells as fast as you can push RT is very devastating in the tight quarters in most of those maps. The only time it doesn’t put someone down is if they get the drop on you, or you somehow miss with the auto aim. Plus it frees up an extra long gun slots and I barely use the pistols in show down.

This.  I bought the pump as soon as I could, and have never regretted it.

I've recently bought the double barreled for "hillbilly chic" purposes.  Given its quick (virtually instant) fire rate for 2 barrels, and its quick reload rate, in practical terms it is about as effective as the pump action, but for straight early unlock potential, value and practicality, its hard to fault the pump.

If your in a tight spot, dual wield sawn-offs are hard to beat. I have alo experimented with schofield or volcaninc right hand, sawn off left hand.  if they're close, the sawn off will get them, if they're still standing, after you've pulled the trigger four times, you've still got 4 or 6 shots left to finish them off.

Definitely buy a shotgun - my recommendation on pure value and functionality is the pump.

As I’ve leveled, I’ve eventually moved to where I use a smattering of damage cards, express ammo plus the Springfield for virtually everything pvp... except up close, when I pull out the dual sawed-off shotguns.

(I’ve gotten away from the Varmint Rifle, partly because it is cheese and partly because I know they’ll nerf it).

I’ll be investigating other shotguns so I’m watching this thread. But frankly I think the Springfield + dual Sawed Offs is probably going to be my long term setup. That’s pretty much what I ended up with in Story mode, too, so it’s nice to see it works about the same on-line.

Should you buy one? No, buy two. I use the repeating shotgun and the sawed off. I use them primarily for defense, meaning when I'm riding some place I keep the repeater out to defend against tools and I use the sawed off for defense on foot when I'm hunting.  I use it as part of my dual wield because it allows me to carry  4 weapon types. Pistol, shotgun, rifle and repeater.

All the above are are good choices , however if your looking for a sure close range kill the double barrel with long barrels will never fail you ! No one will live when hit with both barrels. Easy breezy !

And they are adding that new double barrel on the 26th...hmmm. I think I'm going to get that and maybe the new high capacity repeater.

Wait until the new update as a shotgun will be added then. Do you need one? Not really, very situational advantages to a shotgun, on the other hand if you play RDO semi dedicated it is easy to just get all guns :P

They confirmed there will be new weapons for the update happening on the 26th? I didn't hear of this. I am interested though. I am not big on the shotguns they have personally.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I brought the sawn off earlier.  That'll have to do for now. Gonna do the duel wield tomorrow.

I hope I get this the right way round and the prices about right . The repeater was something like $ 429 but I only had about $ 220.

Then the pump was $ 111 but not unlocked till in the lvl 30 odd I think.

I like having the Springfield Rifle and Lancaster Repeater on my back and shoulder.  I used to dual wield schofields but found that I rarely used them.  Meanwhile I was constantly switching out one or the other, Rifle or Repeater, for my pump action shotgun.  So now, I dual wield the sawed off shotguns and keep my rifles handy at all times.  The Springfield for long range and the Lancaster for shorter range and faster fire rates.  The sawed off shotguns are fast firing and fast reloading.  And frankly, they seem more effective in close range than the schofields ever did.  I too only keep slugs on me on the off chance that I run out of regular shotgun shells and need a little extra ammo.

I have to throw my hat in this ring, namesake alone.

First off, I’m a real life shotgun enthusiast and building my own too. It’s a real man’s gun, no boy with undeveloped shoulders can shoot or handle the violence of a 12 gauge. It is, the most violent weapons system. I’m also pretty handy dual wielding knives in real life.

Online, I carry three shotguns and a shortened Schofield revolver. The pump action came free, day zero of RDO. That one is slung on my back. The semi auto is slung on my shoulder. The sawed off is on my off hand. All Rosewood. All blackened steel, some gold, especially my knife. I’m always in the pursuit of power. Brute force is the answer. My slippery bastard of an outlaw is built for the short game. Anyone who tries to grief me soon learns they crossed the wrong rattlesnake.

Jim Miller is the Outlaw that walks in my dreams, with a violent gust of the pirate wind.

Everybody’s a tough guy, until they meet one.

Funny you mention your shotgun enthusiasm in real life... I’ve been considering buying one of these for a while for the fun factor... since I started playing RDR2 I’ve been thinking of saving up to buy a pair... could be a fun at the range when I have my cowboy gun days... though I’m not 100% sure on firing a load of buckshot with my off hand lol... I can do two .45 colts and hit the plate often enough and quick enough to stay on the scoreboard at a cowboy action match... but they don’t kick like a strange horse when you rummage though the saddle bags.

I wouldn’t call myself quite a shotgun enthusiast though. More of a general gun enthusiast that got on a little shotgun kick lately... I just wanted to expand my 12 gauge collection beyond a goose gun and a grouse gun.
